Every year, on the second Thursday in June, the “Glückstadt Herring Weeks” take place.
The herring season is opened by the mayor taking a bite of a herring roll.
In Glückstadt, this tradition has been honoring the small silver coin for over 50 years.
To this day, it is produced entirely by hand according to a traditional recipe. It has not only won the hearts of the people of Glückstadt, but also of many gourmets throughout Germany and beyond. Hundreds of people eagerly await the opening of the heavy wooden barrel in the historic market square, where invited dignitaries can bite into the first herring of the season.
This summer festival is celebrated in a big way in Glückstadt and is accompanied by a flea market in many streets around the market square over the weekend.
